Dry Brushing

The lymphatic system is a network of tissues and organs that help rid the body of toxins and waste. The lymphatic system transports lymph (fluid containing infection-fighting white blood cells) throughout the body.

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that removing unwanted toxins from the body is a good thing. So if we can get our lymphatic system moving and help it to do it’s job a little better we are going to be happier for it (not to mention feeling more energised and vibrant). Lymph moves when we move - so let’s get to it.

There are various ways for us to help the lymph to move through our system including, manual lymph drainage, Abayanga (a type of Ayurvedic massage), dry brushing, rebounding, walking and exercise as well as herbs.

Dry brushing is one of my favourite ways to get lymph moving and a simple addition to your morning routine. All you need is a soft brush that you can use on your skin. Keep it in the bathroom so that it is handy for you to use before you shower.

Benefits of Dry Brushing

  • Stimulates the lymphatic system and therefore toxin removal.

  • Increases circulation and blood flow.

  • Helps to unclog pores

  • Invigorates the nervous system - therefore another great thing to add to your morning routine.

  • Helps to get rid of any dry patches on your skin.

  • Helps to soften and tone the skin - some even claim it helps lesson the appearance of cellulite

  • Brings oxygenates blood towards the surface of the skin

It is a very easy to do and doesn’t take long….

Simply start at your feet and brush towards your heart. Use nice gentle but firm strokes towards the heart for each area of the body. When brushing your tummy start in a clockwise circular motion, then finish with nice strokes up to the heart. Make sure you are nice and gentle - this is not about hard harsh stroke which will hurt your skin. You can take two minutes to cover your whole body or you can take as long as you like if you have more time available to you.

I do it in the mornings before I jump into the shower (a bit harder to do when we are moving into the winter if your bathroom is a little cooler!!!). I rinse my brush off after each use and put it on the windowsill in the sun to dry out for the next day.

So all in all dry brushing is going to do nothing but help us in our quest to get rid of more toxins from our body. It is a quick and easy thing to add to a daily routine and it doesn’t cost a lot of money to get a brush.

So next time you get the chance, grab a brush and start this yummy routine..

Enjoy…
